For nearly fifteen years, the remaining members of the Beastie Boys have kept the microphone firmly on the stand. Following the tragic passing of Adam "MCA" Yauch in 2012, Mike D and Ad-Rock made it clear: the Beastie Boys were retired, and the vault was closed.
But in a move that has stunned the hip-hop and alternative world, Michael Diamond has officially passed himself the mic.
Mike D has officially launched his solo career, unleashing his debut single "Switch Up" and announcing a run of rare, intimate live shows across the US and Europe.
From Viral Jam Sessions to "Switch Up"
The road to Mike D's solo era actually started completely organically in California. A few weeks back, videos went absolutely nuclear on social media when Mike D made a surprise appearance at a small club gig to perform "So Whatcha Want" alongside Very Nice Person—the indie-dance band fronted by his two sons, Davis and Skyler Diamond.
That "carefree, low-pressure" studio experimentation with his sons quickly morphed into something official. Pulling in production help from SZA and Justin Bieber collaborator Carter Lang, Mike D dropped "Switch Up".
The track carries that exact gritty, late-90s breakbeat energy we’ve been craving. Built on a foundation of fast drum 'n' bass tempos, distorted rock guitars, and squiggly vintage synths, it features Mike D doing what he does best: serving as the ultimate New York hype man over a chaotic, infectious beat.
Is a Solo Album on the Horizon?
While "Switch Up" is tearing up playlists, fans are already asking the obvious question: Are we getting a full Mike D solo album?
While UMG released the single, Mike D has been keeping his cards close to his chest regarding a full-length tracklist. However, during his initial live sets, he has reportedly treated crowds to several unreleased solo tracks alongside iconic Beastie Boys staples. With the creative floodgates officially open, a larger project feels like an absolute certainty.
Bringing the Noise Back to the Stage
If you're expecting Mike D to play massive arenas, guess again. True to his punk-rock roots, he is purposefully booking tiny, unconventional clubs and intimate festival sets.
After completely selling out micro-venues in Los Angeles and the Xanadu Roller Arts in Brooklyn through May, Mike D is taking the show international.
His upcoming 2026 summer dates include:
-
June 5 & 6: London (26 Leake St)
-
June 10: Berlin (Saalchen)
-
June 13: Porto, Portugal (Primavera Sound)
-
June 14: Wicklow, Ireland (Beyond the Pale)
-
June 20: Paris, France (Beyond the Streets Festival)
Carry the Golden Era Identity
Seeing an absolute architect of the culture step back into the spotlight reminds us exactly why 90s hip-hop hits different. The attitude, the breakbeats, and the raw street aesthetics are baked into everything we do.
If you live and breathe this era of music history, you need to rep it right.
